  • Installing additional features to a SQL Server instance already updated to service pack 1

The recently released Service Pack 1 of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 can be consumed to upgrade existing instances of the product in all of it's flavours and editions.
The update can be applied to instances that have only been partially installed, in the meaning that only part of the available features of the edition has been installed.

The discussed scenario is referring to the situation where, for instance, only the relatational engine has been installed and already updated at service pack 1, but now new requirements specify we have to install the reporting services features as well.

We are here documenting our experience satisfying these requirements.

    Current goals:

  • Installing Reporting Services on top of a SQLExpress 2008 instances already patched at service pack 1.
  • Upgrading to service pack 1 level the RTM added features.

  • Installing Reporting Services on top of a SQLExpress 2008 instances already patched at service pack 1 - (Back)

As part of this scenario, we are required to run the RTM installation package of SQLExpress with Advanced Services
and add feautures to an existing installation.
    SQL Server Installation Center

After the traditional checks and installation/check of the Setup support files and Setup support rules, we are required to specify to add additional features to the installed instance of choice, in this case the SQLExpress instance.
    Installation type

In the Features selection dialog, we elect to install both Reporting Services and Full-Text Searcj features to our existing SQLExpress instance.
    Features selection

Soon after the resume dialog we are required to configure as usual the service account for Reporting Services
    Server configuration

As this is not a full installation but we are adding features to an existing instance, the Reporting Services configuration dialog does not allow us to set the configuration mode, and we will be required to later perform this task via Reporting Services Configuration Manager

The final resume preceedes the installation, and after this task, we are reported with the success of the installation
    Installation completed

We can now configure our Reporting Services server via Reporting Services Configuration Manager as required, in our case setting the native mode.
    Reporting Services Configuration Manager

SQL Server Configuration Manager reports the status of the available services as well

We are now ready to upgrade our fresh installed services to service pack 1.

Upgrading to service pack 1 level the RTM added features. - (Back)

    We are now ready to upgrade our fresh installed services to service pack 1, and we proceed executing the SQLServer2008SP1-KB968369-x86-ENU.exe package;
soon after the traditional Welcome dialog with it's initial checks, License's terms acceptance, we are reported with the features to be updated dialog:
we can see the instance is marked as incompletely installed as only the relatational engine has been previously updated, while both the Full-Text Search and the Reporting Services engines and services have been now installed and thus still are at the RTM level
    Specify the features to update

The final resume reports all the features we are going to update
    Ready to update

After the update installation we are reported with the installation success of the service pack 1
